TFT Parade Members Help Utica

Sunday, April 25, just five days after a tornado tore through Utica, Illinois, members of the Chicago TFT Motorcycle Parade Organization, with help from members of the Fox Valley Valkyrie Riders and other motorcycle groups, rode to Utica, Illinois to bring toys to the children affected by the deadly tornado.

The wind was still blowing very hard as the group of bikers entered the small city of Utica, Illinois. Just five days earlier, a tornado had passed through the center of the city, and the evidence of its destruction was everywhere.  The ground was cluttered with pieces of wood from trees and houses, shards of glass, roof shingles, and sheets of paper and cardboard.  Kitchen utensils, children's toys, and furniture could be seen in piles along the recently cleared streets. Many brick buildings were still standing, but some were destroyed or were missing large sections.  The small wood framed houses were not as fortunate.  Many were missing roofs and windows, and others were completely gone, leaving just the foundation.

Hundreds of volunteers were working to repair the damage.  A grain silo, once located along the railroad tracks, was crushed like a paper cup and dumped in the city's center.  Firefighters from dozens of neighboring towns, Red Cross workers, repair people from the telephone, gas, and electric companies were everywhere, working hard to bring things back to normal. The sound of chain saws filled the air.

The plan was to bring toys for the children of Utica, to replace those lost in the tornado, and to bring some surplus Parade sweatshirts for the volunteer firefighters and other emergency workers.  The group of riders waited in the Staging Center outside of Utica, until the proper clearances could be obtained to enter the town.

As they waited, a load of donated of supplies had to be loaded into Salvation Army trucks to take into the town, and the riders were quick to assist.  Then an excited Red Cross worker announced that she was in desperate need for helpers to prepare dinners for the hundreds of emergency workers. The riders offered their services and were soon chopping potatoes and vegetables in the kitchen.  TFT Parade founder Ed "Aminal" Wisniewski could be seen slicing onions; he hasn't forgotten his KP training.

Soon  the riders were granted clearance and were divided into two groups.  One group was placed in the Community Center and distributed the toys and Parade shirts, while the other group cleaned up the area around the elementary school, and focused on the baseball diamond.

In the Community Center, Parade President Bob Kuczera introduced the riders to the volunteers and residents, and invited them to take toys for deserving children, or to bring the children into the center to select their own toys.  As the emergency workers and firefighters came into the center for dinner and a well deserved break, all were given TFT Parade shirts, and thanked for their efforts.

During those following hours, dozens of Utica residents, including the Mayor himself, thanked the riders for coming and bringing their gifts.

That Sunday, The Parade Organization had donated approximately $7000 worth of toys and Parade merchandise to the victims of the Utica Tornado of 2004.
