Jack's Update #54    December 4, 2004

Toys for Tots
Day in Chicago

This is it!  The big day is almost here. Tomorrow, motorcyclists from across America will converge on Chicago to participate in a remarkable motorcycle event.  The Chicagoland Toys for Tots Motorcycle Parade has become the favorite run of riders everywhere. This is when the City of Big Shoulders becomes the City of Big Hearted Bikers.

Tomorrow, thousands of devoted, loyal riders will brave the Chicago weather, to ride together, to show the world the thrill of motorcycle riding and the joy of helping others. The USMCR Toys for Tots Foundation has declared The Chicago TFT Motorcycle Parade to be the "oldest and largest" Toys for Tots motorcycle run held in the United States, and The Chicago TFT Motorcycle Parade is the nation's largest contributor of toys to the USMCR Toys for Tots Program.

If you are a motorcycle rider, bring a new toy and come join in.

If you don't ride a motorcycle, you can still be part of the fun.  Just bring a new toy to Western Avenue, cheer on the riders, and give them your gift as they pass by.

This is the day to help kids.   It's also a time to celebrate and applaud the motorcycle.   It's Toys for Tots Day in Chicago!

Parade Day Safety

Sunday's weather is predicted to be partly cloudy, with a chance of rain toward evening, and a high in the upper 40's. The mild temperatures mean that there may be a record number of participants in tomorrow's Parade.  Therefore, above all, we want to remind all riders to ride safely.

The goal of the Parade Organization is to conduct a safe event, but if you are a rider, that also depends on you.  Motorcycles and their riders have received a lot of publicity lately, some good and some bad.  Let's show the world what motorcyclists can accomplish by working together.

Be aware that any reckless riding or disorderly conduct will not be tolerated.  Parade Volunteers will be on patrol at The Woods, along Western and Foster Avenues, and at the Marine Center.

So please ride carefully and be considerate of others.

Along the Parade Route
The American Indian Center, at Western and Montrose Avenues, will be honoring and thanking all the riders, by performing Native American dances in special ceremonial costumes as the riders pass by.  This is their way of thanking the riders for their contributions to help brighten the Holidays for needy children.  Be sure to look for our friends when the Parade crosses Montrose Avenue which is 4400 North.

Thanks to the Teamster Horsemen who helped procure the hot soup that will be served to all the riders at The Marine Center.  The Marines stationed at Foster Avenue are overseas, along with their supplies, but thanks to the Horsemen, we will again have that delicious soup that we have all enjoyed every year.

Our friends at NBC Channel 5 will have their "chopper" at The Parade.  NBC5 is supporting The Parade by donating the use our their station's helicopter to obtain some high-quality video and still photography of The Parade in progress.  When you see the Channel 5 chopper overhead, be sure to smile and wave.

There will again be a Drive-thru Lane at the Marine Center for all those riders who want to drop-off their toy donations and leave.  Just follow the signs, or a Volunteer, to the Drive-thru area at the Marine Center, where there will be Parade Volunteers stationed outside who will be happy to accept gifts, while riders remain on their motorcycles.

Toy Selection
Please remember, no stuffed animals.  For health reasons, many schools, orphanages, and hospitals will not permit stuffed animals to be given to the children in their care. Games, dolls, books, and sports equipment, toy cars, toy trucks, and toy motorcycles are some of the preferred alternatives.  And remember, we need toys for kids of all ages, from tiny toddlers to tall teenagers.  We need small toys and small dolls for babies, as well as games and sports equipment for young adults.  Please do not wrap your donation.  We will not accept wrapped toys, and any wrapped toys must be unwrapped before they will be accepted.

Toy Distribution
The TFT Parade collects toys and delivers them to the USMCR Toys for Tots Program.  The USMCR TFT Program then distributes the toys to many local groups including various churches, public and parochial schools, hospitals, and neighborhood aid organizations.  It is these groups that deliver the toys to deserving children and families.  The USMCR does not deliver toys directly to individual children or families.

Anyone who wishes to receive toys for underprivileged children should contact their local church, school, hospital or community aid organization.

All neighborhood, charitable groups seeking toys to distribute should contact the USMCR Toys for Tots Program at 3034 West Foster, Chicago, 60625 or call 773-539-7393.
